Kybella is an injectable treatment designed to reduce fatty deposits in the area beneath your chin, commonly referred to as a “double chin.” It’s FDA-approved for use in adult patients and is becoming one of the most highly sought-after treatments within medical aesthetics.
Kybella is formulated from a synthetic form of deoxynucleic acid. This is a substance your body produces naturally that works to break down and absorb fats in the foods you eat. When injected into the tissue beneath your chin, the synthetic form works in much the same way, destroying a percentage of existing fat cells.
At the beginning of your treatment sessions, your practitioner applies a numbing medication to help reduce sensation in the treatment area. Kybella injections are placed closely together in a grid-like pattern.
You might feel a pinching, stinging, or mild burning sensation as the injections are delivered, but most people find treatments easily tolerable. If you feel like you need a break, just let your practitioner know.
Administering these shallow injections takes only 15-20 minutes. Each injection only delivers a small volume of Kybella at a time.
In the hours after treatment sessions, expect a degree of swelling, some redness, and potential bruising. Your body quickly adjusts over the next few days.
Once Kybella goes to work destroying targeted fat cells, your body needs time to process and eliminate the drained fat as well as cellular debris. Your lymphatic system works efficiently to complete this process.
You might begin to notice improvements within a couple of weeks, but it can take a few months to see the full results of your Kybella treatment. Depending on the volume of fat you hope to eliminate, you might need several treatment sessions to achieve optimal results.
Each treatment is spaced at least one month from the last. Many patients come in for up to six separate treatment sessions. During your initial visit, your practitioner assesses your skin and discusses your treatment goals before estimating how many sessions you’ll need.
