Botox Q&A

How does Botox® work?

Botox is an injectable medication formulated from a carefully controlled neurotoxin. When delivered into targeted muscle fibers via a needle and syringe, Botox works by temporarily preventing those muscles from contracting normally.

This means your facial muscles will still be able to create normal facial expressions, but they won’t be strong enough to tug and pull your skin into lines, furrows, and folds. Botox essentially smooths out the more common signs of aging, helping you appear more relaxed and youthful.

What areas respond well to Botox injections?

Botox is FDA-approved for use in treating three specific areas.

Crow’s feet

These lines branch out from the sides of your eyes in a starburst pattern. They are often one of the first visible signs of aging to develop.

Frown lines

These furrows develop in the skin between your eyebrows. They sometimes look like parenthesis marks and can make you appear worried or angry even when you feel relaxed and happy.

Forehead lines

These horizontal lines develop across your forehead as a result of normal eyebrow movements. At first, they’re only apparent when you make certain facial expressions, but over time, these lines remain visible even when your face is fully relaxed.

Experienced practitioners often use Botox in off-label applications to address signs of aging in other areas of the face. Additional neurotoxin-based injectables include Dysport® and Xeomin®.

How long can I expect my Botox results to last?

It only takes a few moments to get Botox injections, and the process is not usually uncomfortable. Many people come in for injections during a short break from work, then return to work afterward to complete their day.

Results develop gradually over the following one to two days and then last around four months. Toward the end of that timeline, you’ll begin to see your lines and folds slowly returning and can decide whether to come back in for additional treatments.

The temporary nature of Botox is one of the things patients love most. If there are aspects of your result you’d like to change, your practitioner can adjust your next round of injections.
